*A Verifiable Time = a time achieved at a meet where stroke and turn judges were present, which means a swimmer could be disqualified for stroke and/or turn infractions.   The Conference Novice meets do not have stroke and turn judges present and are considered non-sanctioned meets.

How do I tell if my swimmer's 'B' time is verifiable?   Check the Top Times report: if you see " 'host name' - Conference Novice meet " next to any event for your swimmer, that means it was achieved at a non-sanctioned meet.  This event needs to be swum again at a sanctioned meet if your swimmer wants to try to qualify for the Novice Finals meet.

Our Philosophy of Competition

The River Falls Swim Club engages in a multi-level competition program within the parameters of the Minnesota chapter of USA Swimming. Locations of swim meets occur primarily within the Twin Cities Metro Area. Similar to the training program, the competition program provides challenging yet success-orientated situations for swimmers of all ages and abilities.

Meet Schedule

The Coaching Staff determines the swim meets in which the team will participate. Each season's meet is marked on the website calendar. Should you have any questions as to which meets are appropriate for your swimmer, please contact a Coach.

Classification and Types of Meets
Swim meets are organized so that children are competing against other children of similar ages and abilities. They are classified by meet type & official times set by MN Swimming.

Fun Meets – for swimmers who just want to have fun and get their feet wet in an unofficial swim meet. These meets are an excellent way for new swimmers to learn and experience the meet atmosphere. There are no 'stroke and turn' judges, so no DQs (disqualifications). All swimmers are encouraged to participate in these meets.

Novice Meets - for swimmers who have not previously participated in a meet and need to establish official times for events or who have events in which their established times are at the B level or below.

B Meets, A Meets, or A/B Meets– These are designated for swimmers who have attained the designated level times. Team scores are kept and team awards are given. These meets may be held in or outside the Metro area and may be combined with more than one level.

Open Meets– These may be combined with designations for swimmers who have attained level times, but may also be open to swimmers with NT, or "No Times." Team scores are kept and team awards are given. These meets may be held in or outside the Metro area and may be combined with more than one level.

State Championship – swimmers at this level have achieved CHAMP level time. This meet is held twice a year in March and August. The team state champion is decided at this meet. This meet may be held at the University of Minnesota, but could be anywhere in the state.

Zone Meet - swimmers at this level have attained the ZONE qualifying time. This is an all-star competition and is held in the summer after that state meet. It is sometimes held in Minnesota, but often located elsewhere. Other teams in our zone include Indiana, Iowa, Midwestern, Missouri Valley, Ohio, Michigan, Lake Erie and Illinois.

Meet Attendance
Each swimmer is encouraged to compete in at least two meets per session. In addition to the schedule posted on the website calendars, coaches usually send out an email notifying members of upcoming meets, entry due dates, and entry procedures and requirements.

How to Enter Meets
The preferred way is to fill out a Meet Entry form and submit it with a check for entry and SPLASH fees; or, email email the Coaching Staff before the entry due date with your swimmer's individual events to swim and submit a check for entry and SPLASH fees. The Coaching Staff may also register participating swimmers for relay events, and these fees are covered by the RFSC.

Swim Meet Procedures

1.   Swimmers should be on deck 10-15 minutes prior to the warm-up time, report to the coach, and be dressed in their swim gear (suit, cap, and goggles). Warm-up will start immediately.

2.    A member of RFSC's Coaching Staff will always conduct warm-ups.

3.   Team suits are recommended and help our club project a unified professional presence on the deck at meets.

4.    Each swimmer is responsible for knowing which events he/she is swimming and for being present in the team area prior to each race.

5.    Report to the coach before and after each race.

6.    At most meets, electronic timing is used. The official time (the time recorded in the computer) appears on the scoreboard when the swimmer touches the touchpad. If a swimmer misses the touch pad or there is a mechanical failure, various back-up times may be used. The timing and score-keeping personnel analyze all times to determine the official times that are then posted as final results.

7.    In between races, swimmers are asked to rest and stay warm.

8.    Swimmers should drink fluids and eat healthy snacks throughout the meet: hunger and dehydration can lead to poor performance.

9.    What to bring:

  • Team suit
  • RFSC swim cap
  • Two pairs of goggles
  • Two towels
  • Quiet games or books
  • Water bottle and healthy snacks

Meet Behavior

It is expected that swimmers, parents, and the Coaching Staff abide by the River Falls Swim Club Code of Conduct and exhibit the same behavior at meets as is expected during practices. Remember that all of us are representing the RFSC during these times.
